Starting over is a gift

When a decision turns itself on you, that relationship goes sour or that job turns out to be all wrong for you, the most difficult decision is whether to stand firm or to turn it around.

tardisIf things get better and we continue on our path as planned, great. But when the path is no longer an option, we sometimes stay stuck in bad decisions longer than we should.

I can think of a few times when I’ve known precisely what to do and held on to hope things would change. Decisions at work, people I cared about, jobs I should have left a lot earlier than I did. Most of the time it was my ego keeping me in the situation. I refused to admit I couldn’t fix whatever was wrong. I also refused to accept help from people that offered me guidance.

Other people are simply pre-disposed to fear failure, and so they avoid risk and the change that may come with it. They would rather stick to the devil they know. But both risk and failure lead to opportunities to make things better, or in some cases, just make things right.

Failure always comes bearing the gift of lessons.

It would be interesting to have Doctor Who’s T.A.R.D.I.S. at our disposal so that we could be transported to the perfect place in time at which to apply our new wisdom. It would be like having the chance to play the game again; this time understanding the consequences of each action. We would always win. We would always be the hero.

Imagine a life where you could avoid any and all type of doubt? Certainly you’d be a star at work. Your family would consider you the wisest of all beings. But, isn’t there something joyous in figuring out the right path? Isn’t that where true wisdom lies?

Luckily,  there is no T.A.R.D.I.S. We can’t jump into a box and cheat ourselves out of growth. When you are forced to start over, regardless of the situation, it is a blessing. If you are smart, you will know what to do with it. Choosing to start over is the gift you give yourself to get things right the next time around. Choose wisely.
